On 17 November the Sunshine Coast Jazz Club is pleased to present Hetty Kate – “Touring from Paris”.
“Charismatic and technically gifted” (All About Jazz, USA) jazz vocalist Hetty Kate has “a stage presence only matched by the clarity of her voice” (James Morrison, AU). Raised in both England and Australia, and now living in France, Hetty has released nine albums and graced stages large and small from New Zealand to New York.
"She’s truly one of the best swing-style vocalists (I’m talking 1940, Benny Goodman style 4/4 swing) on the current scene” Will Friedwald: Jazz Critic & Author (USA).
Hetty’s natural musicality, pitch and vocal purity ensure her voice is instantly recognisable and is often lauded by both musicians and audiences for what she ‘doesn’t do’ as a jazz singer. Originally trained in classical voice, Hetty’s approach honours the composer by keeping true to the melody and lyric and uses improvisation in a way which never detracts from the story of the song. It is this rare quality that draws invitations to work with renowned labels and artists in Australia and Europe, including jazz luminary James Morrison (AU), classical pianist Simon Tedeschi (AU), the Amazing Keystone Big Band (FR) as well as ABC Jazz / Universal Music.
Hetty is On tour from Paris, acclaimed by jazz critic Will Friedwald as “one of the best swing singers on the current scene” and “the real deal,” began her career in Melbourne where she was mentored by some of Australia's best, including jazz luminary James Morrison, whom she toured with for six years. In 2017, Hetty moved to France and has been based there ever since, exploring and performing across Europe, England and North America.
Known for her ‘natural musicality’, clear tone, and impeccable timing, Hetty’s swinging joy and razor-sharp wit sets her apart, skillfully blending poise and humour with a deep respect for the music. A 'hoarder of songs' Hetty has cultivated an enormous repertoire of classics and curios spanning the 1920s through to the 1960s.
Joined by musicians and dear friends, this concert promises a warm and witty journey through a sparkling collection of treasures, from Dameron to Brubeck and Porter to Kern.
