Sweet Thunder Jazz Orchestra, featuring Josh Linnett..... review

On Sunday 19th July the Caloundra Power Boat Club was rumbling from the glorious big band sound of the SWEET THUNDER JAZZ ORCHESTRA. The music of Basie, Ellington, Carter was to the fore. “Basie Talks” set the pace for the afternoon. THE ROOM WAS SWINGING LIKE CRAZY!! Ellington's “Harlem Answer” and his tribute “Portrait of Louis Armstrong” were forerunners of music to come. Drummer Rodney Ford gave a lilting vocal to the Billy Paul hit “Me & Mrs. Jones”. Many more Ellington, Basie and Benny Carter's standards were played to great applause before Ellington's classic “The Mooche” stunned the appreciative audience with an outstanding gravel muted trombone solo . Set 2 opened with our young guest vocalist Josh Linnett with 2 specials “All of Me” & “Nice & Easy” with superb band backing. A young future talent?? No doubt from the audience response. This wonderful swinging band continued with another Ellington classic “Black & Tan Fantasy”. I digress  (Ellington wrote over 2000 melodies with many becoming pop and jazz standards.) Rodney again sang a sensational hit from Basie/Joe Williams “Every Day” & “Call Me Irresponsible”. The afternoon was coming to the end although the band was in no hurry to finish but they did with a show stopping “Serious About Them Blues”. Did the audience enjoy the big band sound. Sure did!!

SWEET THUNDER please come our way again and blast us into submission.
