On Sunday 19th January the Sunshine Coast Jazz Club set a standard for the year for the ‘sold out’ show, with the illustrious iconic group GALAPAGOS DUCK. What a start!!. Led by original member John Conley [Accoustic, electric bass ] The Duck, Mal [horns, vocals], Rodney [drums, vocals], Adam [Tenor sax], Dave [Keyboards, vocals], the jazz music just flows. Waller's “Ain't Misbehavin” sung by Rod led to a glorious ballad often forgotten “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes”, Cyndy Lauper's “Time After Time” always a favourite from The Duck. Dave on Keyboards showed another talent with a solidly sung blues “I Don’t Worry about a Thing”.
Set 2, another ripper “South Rampart St Parade” to open, then we slowed down just a little with the “Pink Panther Theme” giving Adam his due on Tenor. Mal and his trumpet were also lurking in the background. The irrepressible Mal, always there, this time leading some of the audience in a little dance routine and a big version of the hymn “Just a Closer Walk With Thee” led Rod to tell us “I Feel Good”. So were we ….. feeling good. Ben, our soundman was also feeling good!!.
These guys in every song, show why The Duck is so respected. Their individual brilliance in solos is always given plenty of time for the audience to appreciate. So many songs but time runs out. So, we had to “Take The A Train”. Not satisfied we wanted a finish and bang we got it.!! Did we “Hear That Whistle Blowing”. We sure 'nuff did.!! Not to forget the fabulous encore encouraged by our President Julie – “Caravan”.
Thanks Guys. May THE DUCK never stop flying and playing.
