A change of venue, a great stage, the best 6 musicians, The Jazz Notes Showband, (3 from Victoria & 3 from Queensland), AND the wonderful PIPPA WILSON, the Melbourne Queen of R&R, Soul & Jazz.
The set opened with the Jazz Notes playing “All The Things You Are” & the Shearing classic “Lullaby of Birdland”. This bracket allowed each of the musicians to demonstrate their individual brilliance. Then on stage came the lady we were waiting for, PIPPA! PIPPA (yeah) swung straight into a bracket of favourites - “Chasing the Blues Away”, “Sunny Side of the Street” and “As Time Goes By” featuring a glorious trumpet solo from Peter Uppman, which melted a few hearts.
With “It's a Wonderful World” & “Blues in the Night” PIPPA gave full feelings to her jazz soul and voice. The set finished with a jumpin' thumpin' “After You've Gone” with changes in tempo and great solos from every member of the Jazz Notes.
Set two couldn't come quickly enough. “I Cried for You”, a rip roaring “St. Louis Blues” and the beautiful Ballad “What a Difference a Day Made” had the large and appreciative audience applauding loudly. The finish was coming with “Deed I Do”. Not enough for the crowd, they were wanting an encore! PIPPA &The Jazz Notes certainly did that with “The Beginning of the Blues”. The appreciative audience gave a well-deserved standing ovation for PIPPA WILSON & THE JAZZ NOTES SHOWBAND.
Thanks to the SCJC for another outstanding jazz afternoon.
