Simon Drew's Sextet review

Covid 19 has restricted many activities but had no effect on SIMON DREW AND HIS SEXTET at the Caloundra Power Boat Club on Sunday 18th October 2020.   These guys just blew the virus away.  Scatting “I Just Want To Be Here With You” Simon sang many of the great tunes we know.  Ben, on trombone, had a nice solo for “Sunny Side of the Street” and Simon whistled like Toots and Flugel horned a nice “Girl From Ipanema”. There were many highlights from the first set. The guys were just settling into a great relaxed style.

The 2nd set featured Paul with a fine guitar solo for “The Way You Look Tonight” and the audience joined the guys with Cab Calloway's “Minnie the Moocher”.  Paul Cusick played a glorious chorus on piano for “The Nearness of You”.  Sonny Rollins “St. Thomas” was a wow.  Brett and OJ showed their skills on solos and great solid beat backing.

What makes an afternoon so good and enjoyable? First it is musicians who are pros, and enjoy playing; second an enthusiastic audience and lastly, a good sound man.  We had all three.

Thanks to SIMON DREW'S SEXTET and the swinging music Covid 19 for the afternoon was blown clear away.
