Gangsters, Flappers, well heeled (high flyers) and Gatsby Guys Charlestoned, swung their boogies, or just strutted their stuff on Sunday 10th December at the Power Boat Club to the 20's most famous band, THE CAXTON STREET JAZZ BAND. These great Caxton musicians play with empathy the traditional jazz classics be they Joplin, Ellington or Armstrong. The CSJB just swings!!
They opened with “Milenberg Joys” and the first set final “Puttin on the Ritz” had the dancers doing just that! Tom, with his unique style sang the well-known “St. James Infirmary” and the club just bounced. The second set featured Bernice singing “Who's Sorry Now”, the floor rocked to “Sweet Georgia Brown” and Bernice gave a gutsy “CC Rider” which had our crowd applauding like crazy. The band finished with a wonderful swing standard “Jumping with Symphony Sid”.
The backing by the best rhythm section - Bernice on keyboards, Andrew on bass and Dave playing the drums - allowed the soloists John, Paul and Tom to show their extraordinary talents.
Prizes were given to the best dressed Flapper and Gatsby Guy.
Thanks Caxton Street Jazz Band, thanks to Ben our sound man, the volunteers, the staff, and President Julie and the committee for a wonderful, entertaining Sundays of music, fun and laughter.
